Perhaps from Old English cotsæta (“cottager”), from cot (“cottage”) (Modern English cot (“cottage”) (archaic)) + -sæta (“-sitter”); compare coscet. Compare German Hauslamm (literally “house lamb”), Italian casiccio.[1]
