coutume
French
Etymology
From Old French coustume, from a Vulgar Latin *costūmen, a contraction of Latin cōnsuētūdinem, accusative of cōnsuētūdō (“custom”), from cōnsuēscō (“accustom, habituate; accustom oneself”), itself from con- (“with”) + suēscō (“become used or accustomed; accustom, train”). Compare also Medieval Latin costuma. Doublet of costume and consuétude. Cognate with Spanish costumbre, Catalan costum.
