The secondary meaning of cruciatus "marked by a cross" and "crusader; crusade" develops in the 12th to 13th centuries and is often spelled with x (i.e. cruxiatus, also cruxatus, croxatus and variants) in Middle Latin. The feminine cruxata (for cruciata) in the sense of "a crusade" is recorded in the 1280s.
