Compare Daco-Romanian copac, Istro-Romanian copaț ‘thicket, brushwood’, probably from Albanian kopaç ‘treestump’ or less likely cognate to it as a Balkan substratum root. Compare also Slavic kopati, which may be the ultimate origin of both.
