From Proto-Balto-Slavic (compare Proto-Slavic *dьnь), from Proto-Indo-European *déi-no-, ultimately from *dyew-, *dyeu- (to shine). Baltic cognates include Aukštaitian Lithuanian and Latvian diena and Samogitian Lithuanian dėina.
