From Old Galician and Old Portuguese donezỹa (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria, where it is presented as a characteristically Galician word), from Vulgar Latin *domnicella (“weasel”), reanalyzed as *donic- + -ella, and them suffixed with -iña.
