Etymology
From a substantivation of the feminine of Old Catalan empent (the original past participle of empènyer), from Old Occitan, from Vulgar Latin *impinctus, as an alternative past participle of Latin impingō (instead of Classical impāctus). Compare Spanish empenta, Italian impinto.
