From Latin epitheton, from Ancient Greek ἐπίθετον (epítheton), neuter form of ἐπίθετος (epíthetos, “added”), from ἐπιτίθημι (epitíthēmi, “I add on”), from ἐπί (epí, “upon”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “I put, place”).
