Frankish *sciuhan (“to dread, shun, avoid”), from Proto-Germanic *skiuhwaną, *skiwaną (“to frighten”). Cognate with Old High German sciuhen (“to frighten, make fearful”), Dutch schuwen (“to caution”). More at shy.
