From early modern Irish áinleóg, from Middle Irish áilleóc, fainleóc (compare Scottish Gaelic ainleag), a diminutive of Old Irish ainnel, fannall, from Proto-Celtic *wesnālā (“swallow”) (compare Welsh gwennol (“swallow, martin”), Cornish guennol, Breton gwenneli), from Proto-Celtic *wesr-/wesn- (“spring”), from Proto-Indo-European *wósr̥ (“spring”).
