Etymology

According to NE: From Old Swedish forbiuþa, probably from Old English forbēodan or Old Saxon forbeodan.[1]

Both ultimately from Proto-Germanic *furibeudaną, from *furi- +‎ *beudaną.
Cognate with Danish forbyde, Norwegian Bokmål forby, Norwegian Nynorsk forby, forbyde, forbyda, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan), English forbid, German verbieten, Dutch verbieden. Equivalent to för- + bjuda.
