From Proto-Ugric *paĺɜ (“icecrust, frost; to freeze”). Cognates include Mansi по̄люӈкве (pōľuŋkwe, pōľ-, “to freeze”). For earlier proposed cognates such as Finnish palaa (“to burn”)[1], see fal (“to devour”).
