From Ottoman Turkish [script needed] (fildişi), from the elements also found in modern Turkish fil “elephant” and Turkish diş “tooth” (compare Romanian fildeș, Serbo-Croatian фѝлдиш/fìldiš, Greek φίλντισι (fílntisi) /'fildisi/).
