Etymology
Recorded since at least the 1960s, where it occurs in Haldo Gibson's slang dictionary. Probably derived from flat (“flat”), alluding to an unwomanly body shape.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈflɑːˌta/
Usage notes
- Flata has previously been a highly offensive slur towards homosexual women, but has been used by the gay rights movement as a self-descriptive in order to reclaim and de-stigmatize the term. See also bög, "gay, fag, queer, poof".
