From Middle English forleden, from Old English forlǣdan (“to mislead, seduce; lead off and away”), equivalent to for- + lead. Cognate with Dutch verleiden (“to seduce, tempt, entice”), German verleiten (“entice, mislead”), Old Saxon farlēdian.
