From Middle English foryelden (to requite, yield up), from Old English forġieldan (to pay for, reward, give up, forfeit), from Proto-Germanic *frageldaną, equivalent to for- + yield. Cognate with Scots foryeild (to repat; recompense), Dutch vergelden (to reward, pay back), German vergelten (to repay, reward).
