From Ottoman Turkish كونش (güneş, “sun, sunlight”), from Proto-Turkic *güneĺ (“sun, sunny place”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰛𐰈𐰤𐰾 (küneš, “sunshine, sunny place”), Chuvash хӗвел (hĕvel, “sun”).
