From *gal-n-o, enlargement of *gl̥H-o, zero-grade of Proto-Indo-European *golH-so. Cognates include Welsh galw (“call”), English call, Lithuanian gal̃sas (“echo”), Russian го́лос (gólos, “voice”), Polish głos (“voice”), Albanian gjuhë (“voice”)).
