From Galician-Portuguese gualardon, cognate with Portuguese galardão, Spanish galardón; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wiþra (“against”) + *launą (“reward”), literally ‘back-payment’:[1] confer Old French guerdon, Old High German widarlōn, Old English wiþerlēan.
