From Proto-Germanic *gahaitaną (“to promise”), equivalent to gi- + hetan. Cognate with Old English gehatan, Old High German giheizan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (gahaitan).
