From Proto-Balto-Slavic *girˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerH- (“to welcome, greet, praise”). Cognates include Latin grātus (“welcome”), Old Church Slavonic жрьти (žrĭti, “to sacrifice”), Old Prussian girtwei (“to praise”) and Sanskrit गृणाति (gṛṇā́ti, “to praise”).
