Etymology
Probably from Middle Dutch gote or Middle Low German gāte, gōte, gȫte (“gutter”), both ultimately from Proto-Germanic *gutǭ (“groove; channel; gutter”). Related to Old Frisian gete (“outpouring”); see geate.
