grenouille
French
Etymology
From Middle French grenouille, from Old French grenoille, alteration of Old French renoille, from Vulgar Latin *rānucula, from Latin rānunculus, ultimately from rāna. The initial g- may be due to the influence of words that imitate the sound of an animal, (compare Latin grāculus, grācillāre), or from a crossing with Gaulish craxaulus.
