From Proto-Tai *C̬.qawᶜ (“rice”), from Austroasiatic; compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *rk[aw]ʔ (“husked rice”) (Sagart, 2003). Cognate with Thai ข้าว (kâao), Northern Thai ᨡᩮᩢ᩶ᩣ, Lao ເຂົ້າ (khao), Lü ᦃᧁᧉ (ẋaw2), Tai Dam ꪹꪄ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၶဝ်ႈ (khāw), Ahom 𑜁𑜧 (khaw), 𑜁𑜨𑜧 (khow) or 𑜁𑜧𑜈𑜫 (khaww), Saek เกฺา.
