First coined in Swedish as halogen by chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius, based on Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls), ἁλός (halos, “salt”), due to the nature of halides, the salt compounds halogens form with metals. Surface analysis: halo- + -geno.
