1. abandoned, neglected (to the state of abandonment, neglection or lack of care)

   Lapsi jäi heitteille viisivuotiaana, kun hänen äitinsä kuoli.

   The child was left without care in the age of five, when his mother died.

This is an adverb. If there's a need to use it attributively, it must be combined with active present participle of a verb, e.g. jättää (“to leave, abandon”) of jäädä (“to become left alone or abandoned”).

Heitteille jätetty nurmikko on ikävä näky.

A lawn left without care is a sad sight.
