Unclear; possibly either a Baltic loan (compare Lithuanian šývas (“light gray”)), possibly from Proto-Uralic *čiŋa (“foam”) (compare Erzya [script needed] (čov), Eastern Mari [script needed] (šoŋ)), or from Germanic (compare German Hefe (“yeast”)).
