From Middle English *homles, *hamles, from Old English hāmlēas (“homeless”), equivalent to home + -less. Cognate with Danish hjemløs (“homeless”), Swedish hemlös (“homeless”), Dutch heemloos. Compare also German heimatlos (“homeless”), Icelandic heimilislaus (“homeless”).
