hrossafluga

Icelandic

Etymology

From hross (horse) + fluga (fly). The reason for this nomenclature is uncertain, but some think that it has been given this name either because its feet are reminding of a horse's long legs, or because it has legs which are long and clumsy, like those of a horse (compared to the torso).[1]

Pronunciation

Noun

hrossafluga f (genitive singular hrossaflugu, nominative plural hrossaflugur)
