From Old Portuguese illa, from Old Catalan illa, Vulgar Latin *isula, from Latin insula, whence also English isle and French île. Displaced Old Portuguese inssoa, and hence an etymological doublet of the inherited ínsua, as well as the later borrowing ínsula.
