From Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos (village, home), whence also Proto-Germanic *haimaz (village), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 (haims, village), English home, ham (obsolete except in village names), and (perhaps) Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē).
