From Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos (“village, home”), whence also Proto-Germanic *haimaz (“village”), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 (haims, “village”), English home, ham (obsolete except in village names), and (perhaps) Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē).
