From Ottoman Turkish قارپوز (qārpūz, “melon”), from Persian خربز (xarboz, “melon”) and likely influenced by Greek καρπός (karpós, “fruit, grain”), both from Ancient Greek καρπός (karpós, “fruit, grain, produce”), from Proto-Indo-European *kerp- (“pluck, harvest”), from *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Cognate with English harvest.
