From Old High German kund, from Proto-Germanic *kunþaz. Cognate with Gothic 𐌺𐌿𐌽𐌸𐍃 (kunþs), Old Norse kunnr, English un-couth, originally a participle. Compare Danish kundgøre (“announce”) and obsolete kund.
