From Proto-Vietic *-laːs (“fire”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *slaas ~ *slaʔ (“fire, to burn”); cognate with Proto-Palaungic *laas (“to set fire”) and Proto-Katuic *las (“to trigger; fire shot”) (whence Pacoh layh). Compare also Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects lả.
