Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *-lɛːmʔ (“to lick”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)liəmʔ ~ *(c)limʔ (“to lick”); cognate with Khasi jylliem and Bolyu /ljim³¹/. Compare also Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ljam (“tongue; flame”) (whence Chinese 舔).
