loße

See also: losse

Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • losse (southernmost Moselle Franconian; few dialects of Ripuarian, including Kölsch)

Etymology

From Old High German lāzan, from Proto-Germanic *lētaną. The Ripuarian inflected forms lacking -ß- are possibly unshifted relict forms. Compare, however, the Middle High German contraction lān, from which the present forms could be derived. Compare also the Ripuarian past tense mot of mösse, which, for its part, cannot be explained as a relict.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈlɔːsə/

Verb

loße (third-person singular present löt or ließt, past tense leet or looß, past participle jeloße or geloße)

  1. (most dialects) to let
  2. (most dialects) to make (someone do something)

Usage notes

  • The forms löt, leet, jeloße are Ripuarian. The forms ließt, looß, geloße are Moselle Franconian, the past tense being restricted to northern and western dialects.
