lukio

Finnish

(index lu)

Etymology

Coined by Reinhold von Becker, most likely as luk- + -io, However, Latin Lycēum (from Ancient Greek Λύκειον (Lúkeion), compare English lyceum, Finnish lyseo) is possibly also related, and the possibility of the word being a phono-semantic matching cannot be ruled out.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈlukio̞]
  • Hyphenation: lu‧ki‧o

Noun

lukio

  1. A three-year school in the Finnish school system that prepares the students for academic studies (grades 10 to 12), which corresponds to the senior high school (US) and high school in many other places.

Usage notes

  • In the current Finnish school system lukio is preceded by nine years of peruskoulu. Until the 1970s there were four years of kansakoulu followed by five years of keskikoulu. Keskikoulu and lukio were together called oppikoulu. Those who did not pass the exam for oppikoulu continued in kansakoulu and kansalaiskoulu for another four to five years.
