From Vulgar Latin *lūciō, from Latin lūceō, with the Aromanian suffix -escu or through a later Vulgar Latin or early Romance root *lūcēscō as with most other fourth conjugation verbs (with conjugation influenced by Latin lūcēscō). Compare Daco-Romanian luci, lucesc.
