From Proto-Albanian *melana ‘black’, from Proto-Indo-European *mel(H)-n- ‘dull black’ (compare Latvian męl̃ns ‘black’, Serbo-Croatian malina ‘raspberry’, Ancient Greek μέλαινα (mélaina) ‘black’). For sense development from ‘black’ to ‘grudge, resentment’, compare zi. Doublet of mullâ.
