Etymology

Origin unknown. Possibly from dialectal măgulă (compare Aromanian mãgulã), from Albanian magulë ‘heap’, metathetic form of gamulë, or, an expressive creation based on *măc- or moc-. Other less likely theories included Latin macula or *maculum, or a Slavic *magula.
