Etymology
Compound of mā- (“combinatory form of -mēy (“hand”)”) + kwi (“to take”) + suffix -l (“passive nominalization”). Compare Classical Nahuatl mācuīlli (“five”). From Proto-Nahuan *ma:kwil, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *manniki. Probably cognate with Yaqui mamni (“five”) and Shoshone manegite (“five”).
