From mergulho (“dive”) + -ão, or perhaps from a Vulgar Latin *merguliō, merguliōnem, a derivative of Latin mergus or mergulus. Compare Galician mergullón, Spanish somorgujón, variant of somorgujo, Leonese mergollón.
