Earlier mocayre, from Middle French mocayart and Italian mocaiaro, both from Arabic مُخَيَّر (muḵayyar, “choice”), past participle of خَارَ (ḵāra, “to choose”). Form probably influenced by hair. Compare mockado, moire.
