From *neme / *nämä "what", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (“what”). -me is an interrogative formant.
Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (nemä, “something”), Kyrgyz неме (neme, “something”), Kyrgyz эмне (emne, “what?”), Bashkir нимә (nimä, “what?”), Uzbek nima, Uyghur نېمە (nëme, “what?”), Khakas ниме (nime, “what?”), etc.
