From Proto-Vietic *ɗaːŋʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cnʔaaŋ, an infixed form of *cʔaŋ ~ *cʔaaŋ ~ *chaŋ ~ *chaiŋ ~ *cʔiəŋ ~ *chiəŋ (“to expose to heat”). Compare Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects náng, Muong nảng.
