From Middle Dutch naelde, from Old Dutch nālda, from a metathesis of earlier *nādla, from Proto-Germanic *nēþlō. Compare the Old High German alternative form nālda, whence Luxembourgish Nol. Also cognate with German Nadel, English needle.
