From Proto-Germanic *nakwadaz, whence also Old Dutch nakot, Old English nacod, Old Norse nǫkkviðr, nakinn, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌵𐌰𐌸𐍃 (naqaþs). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nogʷós (“bare, naked”).
