netopýr
Czech
Etymology
Panslavic, from Proto-Slavic *netopyrjь, which is a compounded term, with the first element *neto- possibly reflecting Proto-Indo-European *nekʷto-, oblique e-grade of *nókʷts (“night”). The second element is usually taken to be *pyrjь (“flier”) (compare pero (“feather”)).[1] Another theory states it is the result of folk etymology or taboo deformation, based on *lepetyrь from *lepetati (“to fly irregularly”).[2]
