Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *kār(i)da, from Proto-Indo-European *kēr dhē 'to take a root', hence 'to stiffen'[1]. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *ĝher- 'to yearn for'. Compare Old Norse grāðr (“greed, lust, hunger”), Gothic grēdus (grēdus, “hunger”), Middle Irish grad (“love”), Latin grātum. Originally meaning 'to starve, die of hunger'.
