Etymology
Possibly a borrowing from Sami, cf. Proto-Samic *noarvē (“seal”). Cognate with Northern Sami noarvi, Karelian ńorppa, Ludian ńorp. Russian нерпа (nerpa, “seal of the genus "Pusa"”) is a borrowing from Finnic.
